Illuminations
Blackpool stands apart from other towns—a place unmistakably its own, offering a refreshing contrast to the homogenised British urban landscape.
Parts of the town show the fading picture of its prosperous economic past as many of the eloquent Victorian buildings look tired from visitors dwindling throughout the 20th century.
Yet, a vibrant spirit is still alive, with streets packed with eccentric, vividly coloured B&Bs, the ringing of fairgrounds in the air and flashing lights illuminating the promenade.
I approached this project without any preconceived intentions, allowing my process to remain fluid and instinctive. After figuring out I could reach Blackpool through a 20-minute train journey, I started jumping off the train at one end of the town, trailing in and out the roads to the other side, walking the length of each pier and allowing my intuition to direct me. The process required repetition; I'd walk about 8 miles on each visit. The images are all taken between 2022-2023.
